The Ties That Bind is a personal documentary that captures the filmmaker and her family’s journey of conflict and adaptation in response to her youngest sibling’s change in gender identity.  The film is a rare longitudinal look—filmed over twelve years—at how this Southern family navigated challenging emotional terrain at a time before gender transition was widely understood. Wrestling with each other and their religious beliefs, we see the shadow landscape of the culture wars at play. The film is a searing, complex family portrait of family imperfections and the love that remains intact even so.
The film has been featured on PBS’s national online film festival, won the award for “Changing Attitudes about Gender” by national PBS show, To The Contrary’s About Women and Girls Film Festival, and was shown on UNC-TV’s North Carolina as well as many other grassroots festivals and organizations.
Filmmaker Diana Newton will be in attendance for a Q&A after the screening.
Free admission at the door starting at 6:30 p.m.  Seating is limited.  First come, first served.
