What’s it really like to have cancer as a teenager? A survivor travels to all 50 states to uncover the stories of others who’ve also been diagnosed with cancer in their youth. This special screening includes filmmaker and cancer survivor Hernan Barangan, who’s traveled the country interviewing teen survivors, including some in Wake County.
Barangan’s intimate and cinematic documentary CANCER REBELLION brings to light the hidden life of modern day teens who’ve been diagnosed with cancer. This film explores their dreams, struggles and fears with a lens that only a fellow cancer survivor can bring. At 15, Hernan was in their shoes. In an effort to exorcise his own cancer demons, he takes to the road to map out the path that young cancer patients travel from diagnosis to aftermath. His documentary was produced in cooperation with Teen Cancer America founders Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who.
Q&A with the filmmaker and Teen Cancer America executive director Simon Davies follows the film.
